When planning a session of any type, I try to really take the time to get to know my clients – their likes (and dislikes!), expectations, hesitations, and hopes. The things people tell me are important, and paying attention to those things is what makes my sessions successful. This is never more important than in a maternity session, when mamas-to-be are a crazy combination of excited, nervous, and just plain tired. They can’t wait to meet baby, and are having so much fun planning for the future, but they’re also not feeling 100% like themselves, and always have that nervousness that they won’t love their images. This is where we, as photographers, get to shine! It’s my job to make these mamas feel like stars, and give them galleries they can look back on with a smile. And then you have clients like McKenna, who tell you that they’re loving this stage, are so excited for their photos, and love fun images of them laughing and having a great time. I can’t tell you how excited I was for this session, after hearing that!
McKenna and Sam were a blast from the start. After chatting about gowns, we chose two that really highlighted this tiny mama’s growing bump, and made sure she stood out (both from Sew Trendy Accessories!). And when we got to our location on the evening of her session, McKenna surprised me by bringing along some fun hats to use as accessories! I LOVE accessories for a maternity session. We can get a completely different look just by popping on a hat and twirling a gown! So we twirled and danced and laughed our way through this amazing session, and McKenna ended up with one of my favorite maternity galleries ever.
Please, if you’re at all nervous about maternity photos, let me know! Tell me about yourself, what you love, and what you hate. And if, like this gorgeous mama, you love photos and are so excited for the whole thing, tell me that, too! Let me get to know you, and I promise you’ll end up with memories of your pregnancy that you can look back on and smile.
