This gorgeous little heart-breaker is Maverick, and you might have seen quite a bit of his family! His parents started their journey with me as maternity clients, then I saw them again for Maverick’s Fresh 48 and his newborn session. Now Maverick is one, and couldn’t be cuter!

When we started planning this cake smash, Maverick’s parents weren’t sure what theme they wanted to go with. I sent them some ideas, and gave them some time to think about it. A while later, mom got back to me and said “I can’t believe we didn’t think of this sooner, but…”. And so Maverick’s Top Gun cake smash was born! It was the perfect theme for this little guy!

Sometimes when designing first birthday sessions, I try to make sure the portrait portion of the session flows well with the cake smash. I like to use similar colors, aim for a similar feel, etc. Sometimes, though, that just doesn’t feel right. In this case, while Maverick’s cake smash was bright and bold and happy, a more neutral, warm portrait session suited him so much better. I love the greens and browns against Maverick’s bright blue eyes and perfect skin, and I love how the simple props we used let him be the star. By the time we moved on to the cake smash, he was ready for some excitement!

How adorable did this Top Gun inspired setup turn out? I absolutely love the red, white and blue color scheme, and the stars, pinwheels and fun balloons made it look almost like a parade! I know Maverick enjoyed his birthday celebration, and I enjoyed it, too. Happy birthday, sweet boy. I have loved getting to know your family this past year, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!
